Disappearing Views

A friend who was born in Whitstable, recently bought some more of my handmade cards. She was asking where some of them were taken, as she didn’t recognise the locations. It made me think about the importance of documentary photography and how objects Ā buildings and landmarks are painted different colours or the views no longer exist.

Often people cannot remember what a place was like unless they have a prompt. Looking through my Whitstable photographs I thought about how some places have changed beyond recognition.Things have disappeared, disintegrated or are obscured by other buildings. The Waterfront Bar’s blue corrugated roof and ice cream cone is faded now and the building is derelict and up for sale.
