Budapest

Six days in Budapest celebrating two friends birthdays was a welcome treat. We walked for hours every day as it is an easy city to wander around. It has great architecture, friendly people, clean streets and trees and plants everywhere. The House of Parliament on the banks of the Danube has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. There are lovely views on both the Buda and Pest sides of the river and the Chain Bridge with Stone Lions looks out over the Danube. We went on a bus ride up to the Fisherman’s Bastion, with views over the city. Hungarian hussars parade and march around the barracks on Sundays.
Another highlight was a boat ride along the Danube at dusk as the sun was going down and buildings lit up on the way back. There are bronze statues all around the city and two women were posing with ‘Uncle Karl’, who keeps a watchful eye on St. Stephen’s Basilica. We enjoyed the old covered market as well as wandering around the new shopping complex, with department stores like Zara and H&M. Restaurants serve a wide variety of traditional and international food.
